High-definition television (HDTV)

High-definition television (HDTV) is a form of digital television which has a much higer resolution than previous formats such as NICAM or PAL.

Although it is possible for HDTV to be broadcast in analogue format, it is now most commonly associated with digital television.

The standard for exisiting resolutions of HDTV broadcasts are typically either 1280 x 720 pixels or 1920 x 1080 pixels.

At the moment it is usual to obtain a special receiver in addition to a HDTV capable television in order to receive HDTV broadcasts.
